Romney campaign advisor and longtime Washington lobbyist, Ron Kaufman, told Intimates that Romney's lead over McCain in Florida had swelled to 7 points in tracking polls the Friday before the Florida Primary. "No one can take it from us now," said Kaufman. What a difference a few days can make. The gutsy decision by Governor Charlie Crist to back war hero McCain stopped Romney's momentum and provided McCain's margin over the Mormon former Governor. Crist's endorsement was more than perfunctory. Crist worked the phones hard calling in favors and activating his key supporters around the state. Crist helped McCain prove he can win a closed Republican primary dominated by Conservatives.
