Cy Vance and Kenneth Thompson
The disastrous record of Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance will likely result in a serious Democratic primary challenge to his re-election. Deputy DA Dan Alonzo is the head honcho presiding over a series of blunders, loses and disasters that have New Yorker's wondering whether the Waspy Vance can do the job. Vance's legal collegues were shocked when Vance put Alonzo, a former Federal prosecutor in charge of the DA's office. A control freak, Alonzo attended the DSK arraignment himself. Now Alonzo is pushing the prosecution of John Haggerty Jr., a trial that could rock the political world in terms of the secrets it could reveal. Three of Vance's decisions will badly hurt his standing with women: he dismissed the charges against DSK and he allowed former Channel 7 Sportscaster Marvel Scott to plead guilty to a misdemeanor for raping a 14-year-old girl offered to him by a pimp. Scott knew two girls ,14 and 16 ,who were run-aways were being pimped out. He agreed to pay a pimp for sex with the 14 year old. He returned her to the pimp when she refused to have sex with him. The pimp made the 16 year old take the 14 year-old back to Scott and submit! She was raped. No jail time? Thanks,Cy! Then there is the favoritism and wrist-slap for a supporter caught stealing. On June 23rd, Vance allowed Democrat Kelli Conlin to enter a guilty plea in Manhattan's State Supreme Court after being charged with only one count of falsifying business records. Of course, she faces no jail time. Conlin abruptly resigned from her 18-year post as Executive Director of non-profit NARAL - conveniently on the Friday afternoon of this past January 21st - which had Celeste Katz of the Daily News asking "Kelli Conlin Leaves NARAL... But Why?" Less than a month later it was revealed: Conlin was forced out of her post by the NARAL board after a forensic audit completed last December showed Conlin had engaged in high financial misconduct with NARAL credit cards from 2008 to 2010 and "perhaps even longer." The charges against Conlin included $5,709 worth of high-end clothing at Giorgio Armani and Barney's; a $17,000 reimbursement on a Hamptons summer rental where Conlin stayed in the summer of 2009; $100,000 on car services from March 2008 and December 2010; and $22,000 on meals. Conlin made these illegal charges while also earning $309,000 in 2009, including a bonus of $90,000. Consider that less than 5 short months after exercising jurisdiction over Conlin's case publicly, Cy allowed Conlin not only to walk free of any jail time, but only made Conlin pay restitution for the fraudulent charges between 2008 and 2010 without even investigating any of charges Conlin made earlier during her 20-year tenure as president. And this quick exercise was all done with Conlin admitting in court that in July 2009, she submitted a $30,000 bill for a summer rental in the Hamptons on Long Island, when the actual cost of the rental was $17,000. In Cy Vances New York rich white men, celebrities and those who are politically connected walk but don't be caught with a joint if you are poor or black or latino. Gloria Steinem may decline to criticize her friend Cy but a new generation of feminists like Ex-Madam Kristin Davis who after getting out of prison now runs a non-profit organization reporting on and combating sex trafficking, will kick the shit out of Cy. Vance lets Congressman Charlie Rangel violate various Tenant Laws with impunity and sucks up to the Harlem machine in recognition of the important role African Americans and Latinos will play in the Manhattan Democratic Primary. But African American leaders who support Vance better be prepared to be called "Uncle Toms." This guy Vance "dissed a Sistah". Last week Vance announced an "Inner City Summer Intern Program" in his office, despite the fact that it's August and the summer is essentially over. The intern program was the brainchild of Black Democratic political operative Bill Lynch and will have absolutely no impact with African American voters. Perhaps Kenneth Thompson, counsel for DSK maid Nafissatou Diallo, should run for District Attorney. He is articulate, an excellent lawyer and has demonstrated his fearlessness when it comes to taking on the DA and the establishment. Cy Vance, Jr. is not up to the job and he can be beaten.
