Southern Poverty Law Center CEO is Grilled in Congress

The Southern Poverty Law Center is under fire on Capitol Hill after its interim CEO, Bryan Fair, refused to back down from the group’s decision to label Turning Point USA a hate group. During a House Judiciary Committee hearing, Republican Congressman Darrell Issa pressed Fair directly, asking whether the SPLC would recant its attacks on figures like Dr. Alveda King and the late Charlie Kirk.

Fair would not give a yes. Instead, he said the SPLC would “continue to expose hate and extremism,” effectively doubling down on the organization’s M.O. of stigmatizing regular conservatives as threats. Turning Point USA was added to the SPLC’s hate map in 2025, with the organization accusing TPUSA of promoting fear and defending what it called a white-dominated, male-supremacist Christian order. That label has taken on even darker significance after Charlie Kirk was murdered while speaking at Utah Valley University.

Republicans also pressed Fair on why the SPLC targets Christian and conservative groups while refusing to list violent left-wing movements such as Antifa. Fair argued Antifa is an ideology, not a group—a often-debunked talking point used by apologists for left-wing terrorism.

The hearing comes as the SPLC faces serious legal trouble, including fraud-related charges as the feds provide evidence that the SPLC was actually subsidizing the extremism that they purport to fight. It has been obvious to many of us for years that the SPLC is no neutral watchdog. But still, their propaganda appeared in schools nationwide and was even used to train FBI personnel.

Those days are coming to an end as the Trump administration cracks down on this left-wing smear machine that brands Christians and conservatives as extremists while giving the radical left a pass. It is time for the SPLC to have their nonprofit charter revoked and be put out of commission for good.
