Roger Stone, a longtime political ally of President Donald Trump, has welcomed reports that Ghislaine Maxwell might be willing to testify to Congress about her ties to Jeffrey Epstein.
In a post on X, Stone said Epstein’s former associate “has nothing on Trump,” pushing back on speculation that Maxwell’s testimony could implicate the president.
Why It Matters
Epstein, a wealthy financier, died by suicide in jail in August 2019, weeks after his arrest on sex trafficking charges. His case has assumed renewed significance after the Trump administration ordered a review of the case and said it would publish names and evidence about associates of Epstein. However, a recent memo by the Department of Justice and the FBI stated there is no “client list,” and there will be no more charges. This has triggered a backlash among those who want transparency about Epstein.
Last Monday, the Department of Justice and FBI also published a 11-hour prison video to support their conclusion that Epstein died by suicide in his jail cell but some claimed a portion of the video was missing. Meanwhile, some called for Attorney General Pam Bondi to be fired.
What To Know
According to an anonymous source speaking to the Daily Mail, Maxwell, who was convicted in 2022 over her links to Epstein’s illicit activities and is serving a 20-year prison sentence, has expressed a willingness to testify before Congress about her experiences. Newsweek could not verify the report.
The source reportedly told the publication: “Despite the rumors, Ghislaine was never offered any kind of plea deal. She would be more than happy to sit before Congress and tell her story.
“No one from the government has ever asked her to share what she knows. She remains the only person to be jailed in connection to Epstein and she would welcome the chance to tell the American public the truth.”
Stone, a prominent conservative commentator responded to the report, writing: “Personally, I like the news that Epstein’s pimp Maxwell is ready to testify before Congress. Bill and Hillary [the Clintons] are going to be very embarrassed. She has nothing on Trump.”
It was rumored that Bill Clinton was tied to Epstein, though the former president denies this.
What People Are Saying
FBI and Department of Justice, in a memo: “While we have labored to provide the public with maximum information regarding Epstein and ensured examination of any evidence in the government’s possession, it is the determination of the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation that no further disclosure would be appropriate or warranted.”
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, in a statement to The Hill: “President Trump is proud of Attorney General Bondi’s efforts to execute his Make America Safe Again agenda, restore the integrity of the Department of Justice, and bring justice to victims of crime. The continued fixation on sowing division in President Trump’s Cabinet is baseless and unfounded in reality.”
Trump wrote on Truth Social on Saturday: “What’s going on with my ‘boys’ and, in some cases, ‘gals?’ They’re all going after Attorney General Pam Bondi, who is doing a FANTASTIC JOB! We’re on one Team, MAGA, and I don’t like what’s happening. We have a PERFECT Administration, THE TALK OF THE WORLD, and ‘selfish people’ are trying to hurt it, all over a guy who never dies, Jeffrey Epstein. For years, it’s Epstein, over and over again.”
What Happens Next
Speculation about the case will likely continue, despite the Trump administration’s efforts to quash it.
