The Southern Poverty Law Center is facing explosive new allegations after an Alabama grand jury returned a superseding indictment accusing the organization of secretly funneling millions in donor funds to informants tied to extremist groups.
The new indictment alleges the SPLC moved roughly $4.1 million through fictitious accounts between 2014 and 2023 to pay field sources associated with groups including the KKK and neo-Nazi organizations. Prosecutors say some of that money allegedly funded Klan robes and hoods, cross burnings, extremist rallies, recruitment, racist paraphernalia, and living expenses for informants.
The indictment says SPLC donors were led to believe their money would be used to “dismantle” violent extremist groups, while the organization allegedly subsidized the very activities SPLC publicly condemned. The superseding indictment keeps the original 11 counts, including wire fraud, false statements to a federally insured bank, and conspiracy to conceal money laundering.
One alleged field source, identified as F-9, was reportedly paid more than $1.2 million while infiltrating a neo-Nazi group. Prosecutors also allege an SPLC employee had a romantic relationship with that source and that donor money was used for personal living expenses. The SPLC has pleaded not guilty, and its attorney says the charges are factually and legally wrong.
This case raises devastating questions about one of the left’s most powerful activist organizations. For years, SPLC branded conservatives as extremists. But it appears they were stoking the fires of extremism to justify the expansion of their power. It is like when Jussie Smollett and others have committed hate hoaxes for the purposes of biasing the public against MAGA, or when the feds infiltrate protests like Jan. 6 to create the violent right-wing threat they were warning about. It’s a self-fulfilling prophecy. And because of this indictment, we will get a bird’s eye view into exactly how this leftist system of manipulation truly works.
