Obamacare premiums are climbing again—and the latest numbers expose the inevitable failure of a government-designed healthcare system. Early filings from 77 insurers show a median proposed premium increase of 14 percent for 2027.
That follows a 20 percent median increase for 2026 and marks the fifth straight year of rising costs. The benchmark silver premium—the figure used to calculate federal subsidies—jumped roughly 25 percent this year. Insurers say the remaining Obamacare population is becoming smaller and sicker as healthier people leave the exchanges.
Enrollment reportedly dropped by about three million, creating the same predictable insurance spiral conservatives warned about from the beginning: higher costs drive out healthier customers, leaving behind a more expensive pool and forcing premiums even higher.
Supporters of the failed Obamacare system will point to federal subsidies, but subsidies do not reduce the actual cost of healthcare. They simply transfer more of that cost to taxpayers. Nearly nine out of ten Obamacare enrollees now receive advance premium tax credits, with the average subsidized customer receiving about $650 per month.
In other words, Washington is using taxpayer money to conceal how unaffordable the “Affordable Care Act” has become. Current enrollment remains high, but analysts are already projecting a major decline in the individual market, with some estimates ranging from 17 to 26 percent. The lesson is clear. Obamacare did not bend the cost curve downward.
It expanded bureaucracy, distorted the insurance market, increased dependence on subsidies, and left families facing relentless premium hikes. The law’s defenders promised affordability. What Americans received was a permanently subsidized system growing more expensive every year. We were swindled, and like every socialist program, we are watching it fail miserably right now.
