European officials are warning that Russia’s so-called “grey war” against the West is entering a more dangerous phase, with pipelines, power cables, offshore networks, and subsea infrastructure increasingly vulnerable to sabotage and cyberattacks.
Recent incidents in the Baltic and North Seas have raised fears that Europe’s energy grid is becoming the new frontline. Russian-linked vessels have been accused of cutting undersea cables, mapping gas pipelines, surveilling nuclear facilities, and probing critical infrastructure. A Russian suicide attack drone recently struck an apartment complex in Romania, accidentally according to the Kremlin, but this could be a deliberate act meant to send a message to NATO that they are not untouchable.
But the undeniable fact is that the longer the Ukraine war drags on, the more dangerous and expensive it becomes for the West. The European establishment has insisted Russia is weakening, but the facts do not necessarily back up that claim. In many respects, it is Europe and the West who are weakening as they dump billions into a war effort that is a stalemate at best.
Meanwhile, Moscow is responding by expanding hybrid attacks beyond Ukraine and into Europe’s energy lifelines. That means Western taxpayers may be underwriting a wider confrontation that puts their own power grids, shipping lanes, and economies at risk. Russia certainly has suffered battlefield losses, recruitment problems, energy strikes, sanctions, and economic pressure.
It is not all hunky dory over there, to be sure. But hurting Russia comes at a major cost for the West, particularly Europe. Ukraine remains dependent on massive outside funding and weapons packages as their undemocratic ruler Volodymyr Zelenskyy is exposed for corruption amidst widespread allegations of mismanaging funds. Europe is destroying themselves by supporting the Russia/Ukraine war effort endlessly.
Meanwhile, they refuse to lift a finger to help President Trump demolish Islamic terror in Iran. President Trump should cut off these freeloaders and then force them to prioritize their resources, which just might end the madness in Ukraine.
