In a recent Economist/YouGov Poll, conducted from October 23 to October 26, Democratic respondents said they prefer socialism over capitalism when asked which is the better economic system.
Breitbart reports that when respondents were asked to identify what they believe is a better economic system, capitalism or socialism, 38 percent of Democrats chose socialism as the better economic system, compared to 25 percent who chose capitalism.
In contrast, the wider public strongly favored capitalism, with 51 percent selecting it as the better system, 20 percent choosing socialism, and 29 percent unsure, according to Newsweek.

Opinions varied drastically along party lines with 79 percent of Republicans saying capitalism is better, compared to five percent who said socialism.
The survey of 1,440 respondents, comes as Democrats are dealing with an internal war between “moderate” Democrats and those who openly identify as socialist, including members of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).
Democrat candidates are proudly displaying the socialist banner with Colorado Democratic congressional candidate Melat Kiros claiming there is actually nothing more American than socialism.
In an interview on PBS’s Firing Line with Margaret Hoover, Kiros stated:
I don’t think there’s anything more American than subscribing to an economic philosophy that, as the evidence shows, is the only one that’s actually capable of delivering things like life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
When pressed on whether socialism delivers on the values of the Declaration of Independence better than capitalism does, Kiros answered with an emphatic “Yes.”
A separate CBS News/YouGov Poll conducted earlier in the year, from August 12 to August 14, 2026, showed a similar partisan divide regarding favorability with 58 percent of Democrats saying they viewed socialism positively, while only 32 percent viewed capitalism positively., according to The Hill.
In addition, a Fox News Poll published on October 31, 2026, highlighted shifting economic perspectives among younger demographics with 48 percent of Americans aged 18 to 34 viewing socialism favorably, driven largely by economic concerns regarding affordability and the rising cost of living.
Breitbart reports that there has been backlash to the socialist ideals and leftist extremism in other areas of the U.S. with Detroit City Council member Mary Waters telling MS Now there is a “disconnect” in the Democratic Party as they embrace socialist ideals.
Waters said, “Democrats really don’t even understand black people. They are allowing the socialists, the Democratic socialists, to run this party — to run it and to ruin it.”
